SEFI Public Finance Alliance

The SEFI Public Finance Alliance will promote the sharing of smarter and more efficient ways to invest public funds in renewable energy and energy efficiency projects, companies, and technologies.

It is an international platform to support the dissemination and promotion of best practice for current and emerging public finance mechanisms that increase innovation and private investment in the renewable energy and energy efficiency sectors. The scope of the Alliance is global, but membership is limited to publicly-backed sustainable energy funding agencies.

BASE International Investment Forum for Sustainable Energy

The BASE Investment Forum is a regularly held event that brings together key individuals from the finance community and the renewable energy and energy efficiency business.

The BASE Forum enables investors to make first-hand contact with innovative sustainable energy start-ups and projects and to explore investment opportunities directly with the project sponsors. In addition to the presentation of projects, a Forum workshop is held that deals with a topic of special interest to investors and financial institutions involved in sustainable energy financing.

UNEP work with Export Credit Agencies

During the 1990s, Export Credit Agency (ECA) financing through loan, project guarantees and investment insurance averaged an estimated US$ 80 - 100 billion/year, roughly twice the levels of official development assistance provided during the same time.

The subsequent social and environmental impacts have led to a growing awareness of the importance of activities financed by Export Credit Agencies. UNEP Energy, in close cooperation with the UNEP Finance Initiative (FI), is supporting the OECD's effort to strengthen common approaches of Export Credit Agencies by providing substantial information on how private banks and insurers assess environmental risk within their business operations. UNEP is also supplying ECA staff with a platform for exchanging experience and for looking into new products and processes that will help promote renewable energy technologies.

UNEP FI Climate Change Working Group

Climate Change threatens society and the environment in terms of damage to economic systems and human health.

UNEP FI's Climate Change Working Group is striving to address the challenges of climate change by

  1. raising awareness concerning the problem of climate change,
  2. seeking immediate reductions in greenhouse gas emissions,
  3. taking steps to manage the effects of climate change on society and the environment and
  4. encouraging research that will define the effects of climate change more precisely and refine the technology that helps fight it.
